Indians afraid of naked foreigners on the beach
Many beaches have issues. Often, the issue is with trash, crowdedness, or rowdy drunk teenager. But the beaches in Canacona have a different problem, and one that you wouldn’t think of - nudity.
Residents of the area are moving out in droves these days. Foreign visitors to the Canacona beaches are stripping down - the women are either going topless, or completely nude. To the local residents, this is shocking, and sometimes even vulgar. Locals don’t want to take their children to the beach for fear of running into some topless women sunbathing.
In Europe, topless and nude sunbathing is the norm. Adults and children alike can enjoy the beach, and no one is afraid of the naked people. But India is still a country where the local women cover themselves from head to toe - its’ very conservative. And, technically, it is illegal to be topless on the beach in Canacona. But the police don’t want to tell the women that, probably for two reasons. One, the women might get offended and go home, and Canacona could cease to be a popular tourist spot.
