We had a similar thing happen here (Oxford, MS) a few months ago. Smoking is now banned in all restaurants and bars in the city. It will take some time getting used to not having to request a non-smoking area in restaurants. I went out for lunch with some friends a few weeks ago and we automatically asked for non-smoking, to which the hostess said something like 'yeah they are all non-smoking now'. Oh yeah, I forgot! hehh

Haha good point. Who would even want to go to a bar in Baltimore City of all places? I'd be more worried about getting shot of stabbed than dying of second hand smoke.

I'm so offended by this ban that, even though I live only a mile from the Baltimore City line, I promise that I will NEVER patronize a bar in Baltimore again (however, in parentheses he adds.... 'even though I live only a mile from the Baltimore City line, I haven't patronized a bar in Baltimore in at least the last 20 years.')

Jeremy: I can see that.. people have an initial outcry, then they stop caring and get on with business. It's hard to imagine a ban on smoking actually *hurting* business long-term though. After all, it's not like they can just go to another bar to drink & smoke.

Garry:
I'm a non-smoker all day long ( can't be in the same room as smokers - heck I don't even let smokers in my car until they air out for 5-10 minutes! ). However, I just don't see the point of banning smoking in bars. It seems like a waste of lawmaker's time. Perhaps in a Utopia of some sort where there are no more pressing issues, I can see it. But Baltimore is a human wasteland at best. The murder and violent crime rates are simply astronomical.... I can think of hundreds of better uses for the politicians time than smoking in bars, of all things.

So if you can't smoke in bars, when smokers go outside to smoke... they can now get arrested for being drunk in public. Sounds like a big set up!

LOL...

All kidding aside though, I smoke, and respect that non-smokers don't want to be forced to be inside with smokers. Second hand smoke is proven to cause health issues, and it's not fair for non-smokers to be put into that risk.

But another point to that is if these bars are private businesses. The government shouldn't have the option to force a private business to become a non-smoking environment.

But who knows... I smoke and I don't bitch or complain about it because I know that it is bad for your health and it's not fair for me to make my problem someone else's.

I am having tons of difficulty quitting. I don't like that I smoke, but the urges to smoke are very great. Overpowering really.

They banned smoking in public restaurants in NY a while back, despite what the biased media says, there has not been a single company that can prove their business is doing worse, in fact the vast majority say business is booming.

Very true...
While I find smoking as disgusting as anyone, it seems kinda silly for politicians to waste time deciding whether a bar allows smoking or not... I don't go to bars often (once or twice a month), but it comes with the territory -- if it's too smoky (or, for that matter, too loud, or too something else), I leave...
Here's a novel idea...How about if the politicians spend their time on some important issues?
